AN ULTRASOUND COURSE FOR INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENTS

TOPIC: Education, Research, and Quality Improvement TYPE: Original Investigations PURPOSE: Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is accepted as a safe, efficient, effective method assessing patients diagnosing variety clinical conditions. This diagnostic tool that allows for rapid bedside assessments often guides management. Additionally, proficiency in skill sought by many housestaff, it beneficial to their future careers. We developed formal training curriculum an effort improve resident POCUS increase its use patient care. METHODS: During the 2020-2021 academic year, course expanded include 28 internal medicine physicians ranging from PGY-1 PGY-3 who expressed interest learning POCUS. The aimed teach examinations vasculature, heart, lung, intra-abdominal structures utilizing hands-on at besides various intensive unit under aid supervision critical physician. included ten 2-hour sessions took place monthly. initial session consisted full exam on standardized patient, which aided identification normal structures. A total four hours (split into two two-hour sessions) were dedicated teaching practicing each individual body system.
